The Missing Semester
What nobody taught you about contracts, fees, care plans, and staying in this past year three.
For new and recent grads. Bring your questions.
You can adjust. That was the easy part.
You passed boards. You know more anatomy than anyone you'll ever treat.
Then you walked out and found the job is mostly things nobody covered.
What to charge. How to explain a care plan without sounding like you're selling. What that associate contract actually commits you to. What to do in a week where four people cancel. Whether the practice down the road is an opportunity or a trap.
I graduated in 1994 and spent two years learning all of it the expensive way. Not because I was slow. Because nobody had told me, and I didn't know what to ask.
Thirty-one years on, I've watched the same thing happen to a lot of good clinicians. The ones who struggle usually aren't the weakest clinically. They're the ones who never got the other half.
What I'll cover
-
Your first contract, line by line
Restrictive covenants, patient ownership, what
% of collectionsactually means, and the two clauses I'd walk away from. - What to charge, and why discounting is the fastest way out of practice Real numbers, not principles.
- The report of findings, word for word The conversation that decides whether someone completes care. I'll give you the script I still use.
-
The three numbers to watch from month one
Most new grads track revenue.
Revenueis the last number to tell you something's wrong. - How to survive year two The year the novelty is gone and the loan payments aren't. This is where most people quit, and it's avoidable.
- Building a practice and a life at the same time Thirty years in, this is the part I'd most want you to hear.
Why listen to me
I've been in practice 31 years and owned my own clinic for 25 of them.
I'm not going to tell you it went smoothly. I made most of the mistakes on that list personally, some of them twice, and a few cost real money. That's the reason I can be specific about them.
I'm not selling a system. This is what I'd tell a new grad over coffee, in an hour, for free.
What this is, and isn't
- It's free, and it's live. Sixty minutes. Roughly forty from me, twenty for your questions.
- It's specific. Actual numbers, actual clauses, actual scripts. Not principles you already agree with.
- Nothing here is a guarantee. No two practices are the same, and I won't pretend otherwise.
- There's no pitch built into it. At the end I'll mention how to work with me, once, and then I'll stop.
Common questions
I'm still a student. Is this for me? +
Yes. Final year is the best time to hear it, before you sign anything.
I've been out three years. Too late? +
No. Most of what I'll cover is what people end up fixing in year three because nobody warned them in year one.
Is this a pitch for coaching? +
At the end I'll mention how to work with me, once. The other fifty-five minutes are the content. You're welcome to leave before that part.
Will there be a recording? +
Yes. Register and you'll get it either way.
Is this only for chiropractors? +
It's written from a chiropractic practice, but contracts, fees, care plans, and burnout are the same conversation for most clinicians.
The clinical education was the hard part.
You already did it.
